20:52 The Sacred Places of Belarus: The Orthodox Churches of Soligorsk District

Irina Zakharchenko Do you know that on the territory of our district there were 16 churches and chapels and even a monastery? All of them were destroyed except the old church in honour of the Mother of God Protection in the village of Chizhevichi. It has remained staying for 215 years due to the prayers of the faithful and their priests.     Do you know that the majority of the priests serving in those churches were executed during 1930-ies: either by shooting or being exiled? Let’s name them. They Have Stood the Test of Belief: New Martyrs of Soligorsk Land 1.Popovtsy: Priest Vladimir Pinkevich led the congregation of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul till 1917. In 1938 he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years. The church was ruined. 2.Khorostovo: During the pre-war years of the 20th century the priests of the church in honour of the Mother of God Protection were Kosma Fain and Ioann Semenovich. Father Ioann was burned in the church with the inhabitants of the village by the fascist invaders. 3.Krasnodvortsy: In 1920 priest Mikhail Sulkovskiy who served in the church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God was awarded a calotte.  The same year he was arrested and Protopriest Nikolai Leshkevich, born in 1886, began his serving there.  In 1934 the church was closed and Father Nikolai began serving in the church in honour of Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Krivichi. On the 7th of May 1935 he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years. He didn’t return. 4.Starobin: In 1917 Priest Mikhail Savitskiy who was born in 1869 led the congregation. On August 5, 1937 he was arrested for his services. On September17, 1937 he was executed by shooting in Slutsk. In 1932 Protopriest Feofan Shemetilo was arrested and sentenced to 10 years. He didn’t return. 5.Bolshoi Rozhan: In September 1911 Priest Vladimir Rubanovich, born in 1889, was appointed to lead the congregation. In December 1937 he was arrested in another congregation and in half a month executed by shooting. 6.Pogost: Priest Vasiliy Buichikov, born in 1887, led the congregation in honour of Saint John the Baptist. He was arrested on December 25 in 1932 and executed by shooting. His family was sent to the north. At the same time the reader of the church Pavel Budilivich was arrested and executed by shooting. After that the church was closed. 7.Krasnaya Sloboda: On February 18 1930 Priest Alexei Meliorov was arrested and sent to Siberia for 3 years. Nobody knows about his faith. The church was closed and in 1937 it was destroyed. 8.Chizhevichi: Priest Ioann Pankratovich, born in 1870, was arrested 0n August 23 1937. In spite of the decision of the authorities in 1935 to close the church, he performed sacraments, served occasional religious rites, called the parishioners to demand the renewal of the service. In October 1937 he was executed by shooting in Slutsk. In 2000 he was glorified as a saint. Through the prayers of New Holy Martyrs may the Lord protect and save us!
